Mumps headache: what to know

Headache may accompany a viral illness because of fever, inflammation, poor sleep, reduced food intake, or dehydration. With suspected mumps, it may occur alongside tiredness, fever, and tender swelling around the ears or jaw. A headache is also common in conditions such as a cold, sinus inflammation, COVID-19, heat exhaustion, or dehydration, so it cannot by itself show which illness is present.

Consider when the pain started, where it is located, whether it is getting worse, and whether there is neck stiffness, vomiting, light sensitivity, rash, confusion, or weakness. This detail helps a clinician assess urgency and possible causes.

Rest in a quiet room, drink fluids regularly, and eat a small meal if you can. Reduce screen brightness if light worsens discomfort. Take only a recommended pain reliever for your age and health history, following the label; ask a pharmacist if you have liver or kidney disease, are pregnant, or use other medicines. Avoid close contact and shared household items while fever or a contagious infection is possible.

Get emergency help for a sudden, extremely severe headache, headache with a stiff neck or confusion, weakness on one side, fainting, seizure, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, or a purple or rapidly spreading rash. Arrange prompt medical advice for a new headache with fever and cheek swelling, worsening pain, or inability to keep fluids down.
