What should you know about multiple vertebral compression fractures?

A vertebral compression fracture happens when a spinal bone partly collapses. When more than one vertebra is affected, pain may occur in the lower or upper back and may worsen with standing, walking, coughing or bending. The spine can gradually become more rounded, and everyday movements such as dressing or lifting may become difficult. A clinician may use an examination and imaging to identify new fractures, check spinal alignment and look for an underlying bone-strength problem. A fracture can occur after a fall, but weakened bone may also fracture during an ordinary movement.

Arrange an appointment promptly, especially if pain started suddenly or follows a minor movement. Until assessed, avoid heavy lifting and forceful twisting, but keep moving gently within your comfort rather than staying in bed for long periods. Treatment may combine pain relief, activity guidance, exercises and a plan to protect bone strength; bisphosphonate therapy may be discussed when appropriate. Kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty are procedures a spine specialist may consider for selected painful fractures after reviewing imaging and other options.

Seek urgent medical care for new leg weakness, numbness spreading down a leg, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe pain after a fall. Fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain that is rapidly worsening also deserves prompt assessment. These signs can indicate nerve involvement or another condition requiring timely examination.
