What should you know about multiple cherry angioma?

Short answer

Multiple cherry angiomas are usually small, benign blood-vessel growths, but a rapidly changing or bleeding spot should be examined.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical colour
Bright red to purple-red
Main concern
Atypical change or repeated bleeding

What these red spots are

A cherry angioma is made from small blood vessels close to the skin surface. It may look bright red, deep red or purple-red, and can be smooth or slightly raised. Several may appear over time on the trunk, arms or other areas. They are not the same as acne or a bruise, and their presence does not by itself suggest a serious disease. A clinician can often recognise a typical lesion by looking at it, while an unusual spot may need closer examination.

What you can do

Leave stable, symptom-free spots alone unless you want cosmetic advice. Avoid picking or cutting them, since bleeding can be difficult to control at home. If removal is desired, a dermatologist may discuss light-based treatment such as [Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/pulsed-dye-laser-treatment/) or heat-based [Electrosurgery](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/electrosurgery/). The choice depends on the lesion, its position, skin type and the possibility of a mark afterward.

When to seek care sooner

Book a prompt examination if one spot grows quickly, develops an irregular appearance, repeatedly bleeds, ulcerates, becomes painful, or looks unlike your other angiomas. Seek urgent help for bleeding that does not stop with firm, continuous pressure. A changing lesion needs diagnosis rather than automatic treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the spots look like cherry angiomas, whether any lesion needs dermoscopic review, and which removal method best fits its location. Discuss expected redness, crusting, pigment change and the care needed while the skin heals.
