Mucosal melanoma pathology: how to read the outline

The report may identify the tissue examined, the tumour type, and whether melanoma cells are present. It can describe the depth or extent of invasion, ulceration, margins, and other microscopic features. If lymph-node tissue was sampled, the report may state whether melanoma cells were found there. These terms are technical observations, not a complete forecast for one person.

Request a copy of the full report and ask the treating team to mark the diagnosis, margin status, invasion details, and any tests that need explanation. Keep the report with scan results and procedure notes. Do not interpret one unfamiliar word in isolation; its meaning depends on the specimen and the clinical setting.

Contact the clinic promptly if you have received a report suggesting melanoma and do not yet have a follow-up appointment. Seek urgent help for worsening bleeding, rapidly growing mouth or nasal swelling, breathing difficulty, or inability to drink. After a biopsy, increasing redness, fever, pus, or uncontrolled bleeding also needs timely medical advice.

Ask whether the report confirms melanoma, whether the margins are clear, how deeply the tumour extends, and whether lymph nodes or distant sites need assessment.
