What should you know about mucosal lentiginous melanoma?

Short answer

Mucosal lentiginous melanoma is a melanoma arising in a mucous membrane, where an unexplained dark or changing area needs prompt specialist assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the name

Mucosal melanoma begins in pigment-producing cells in moist linings such as the mouth, nose, genital tract, or anal canal. Lentiginous describes a pattern in which pigment cells spread along the surface before or alongside deeper invasion. Symptoms can be subtle: a new dark patch, persistent sore, bleeding, a lump, pain, blockage, or a change in an existing pigmented area. These signs have many possible causes, so they do not by themselves establish melanoma. Examination and tissue diagnosis are needed.

What assessment and treatment may involve

Arrange review with a clinician experienced in pigmented mucosal lesions, especially when a change persists or recurs. Assessment may include careful examination, imaging, and a biopsy planned for the site. If melanoma is confirmed, the team considers the tumour location, depth, spread, and overall health. Treatment may involve surgical excision or other skin cancer surgery, tumour removal surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and immunotherapy. Follow-up after cancer treatment helps monitor the treated area and broader health.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment for unexplained mucosal bleeding, a sore that does not heal, a growing or darkening patch, a new lump, persistent blockage, or worsening pain. Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, inability to breathe or swallow, sudden severe headache, weakness, confusion, or vision changes. Those emergency symptoms require immediate care regardless of the underlying cause.

Questions for your doctor

Where is the lesion located and how will it be sampled? What does the pathology show about depth or spread? Which scans or lymph-node assessment are needed? What treatment sequence and follow-up schedule fit my case?

Questions people ask

Does every dark mucosal patch mean melanoma?

No. Pigment changes have several possible explanations, but a persistent or changing area should be examined rather than self-diagnosed.

Why might lymph nodes be assessed?

Lymph-node assessment can help the team understand whether melanoma cells have travelled beyond the original site and guide treatment planning.
