What should you know about MS and shortness of breath?

Advanced weakness of the muscles used for breathing, poor coordination, reduced mobility, anxiety, or swallowing problems can affect breathing in MS. However, breathlessness may also come from asthma, acute bronchitis, COPD, bronchiectasis, anaemia, an irregular heartbeat, angina, or a severe allergic reaction.

The pattern matters: breathlessness at rest, chest pressure, wheezing, fever, palpitations, cough, leg swelling, blue lips, or symptoms after a new food or medicine can point to problems needing rapid evaluation.

Stop exertion, sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and use a prescribed reliever inhaler exactly as directed. Do not borrow someone else’s inhaler. Note the onset, activity, position, associated symptoms, and whether speaking in full sentences is difficult. Arrange a clinical review for recurring or exertional symptoms.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain or pressure, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, sudden facial or throat swelling, or inability to speak normally because of breathing difficulty. Do not drive yourself during a severe episode.

Ask whether your breathing muscles, lungs, heart, blood count, swallowing, or medicines need checking, and what action plan to follow if breathlessness returns.
