What should you know about whether an MRI scan is painful?

The scanner makes loud knocking and buzzing sounds while each set of images is collected. You lie still on a firm table, and the position can become uncomfortable if the scan takes time. Some people find the enclosed space distressing. The scan uses magnetic fields and radio waves, not x-rays.

If contrast is needed, the injection may briefly sting or feel cool in the arm. Tell the team immediately about pain, burning, swelling, itching, chest tightness or breathing difficulty. A painful scan is not expected, so new or increasing pain should be addressed rather than endured.

Before the appointment, discuss claustrophobia, back or joint pain, difficulty lying flat, hearing problems and any need for support. The team can explain the sequence, offer ear protection and use cushions or positioning aids. You may be given a call button, and staff can pause the scan when clinically appropriate.

Wear comfortable clothing without metal and remove jewellery, watches and cards. Report implants, metal fragments, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney problems and previous contrast reactions. Do not take a sedative unless it has been prescribed with instructions for this appointment.

Tell staff during the scan if you feel trapped, overheated, faint, short of breath or in pain. After contrast, obtain urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash or fainting. Seek emergency care for sudden weakness, a new seizure or a severe headache.

Ask how long the scan may take, whether contrast is planned, what pain relief or positioning support is available, and what to do if anxiety makes it hard to remain still.
