What should you know about metal and an MRI scan?

MRI uses a powerful magnetic field. Certain objects may move, heat up, malfunction, or distort the pictures in that field. Not every metal object has the same risk: some implants are designed and approved for MRI under specific conditions, while the status of an older or unknown device may need checking. Metal fragments in the eye or elsewhere also matter, even if they are small.

Tell the team about pacemakers, defibrillators, cochlear implants, infusion pumps, aneurysm clips, surgical hardware, shrapnel, and previous work involving metal. Bring an implant card or device details if available. Dental fillings and some joint replacements may be compatible, but the imaging team must make the decision after reviewing the device and scan conditions.

Answer the safety questionnaire accurately and ask about anything uncertain rather than guessing. Remove jewellery, watches, piercings that can be removed, hair accessories, hearing aids, phones, keys, and cards before entering the scanner room. Tell staff about tattoos or permanent makeup if requested, and mention pregnancy or possible pregnancy. Do not take an unapproved object into the scan area.

Alert staff immediately if you notice pulling, heating, pain, a burning sensation, or device changes during imaging. After contrast, report breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread hives, or faintness urgently. Seek emergency care for sudden neurological symptoms such as a seizure, new weakness, trouble speaking, or severe abrupt headache.

Ask whether your specific implant is MRI-conditional, which documents the centre needs, and whether the scan can be adapted. Ask what alternative imaging is available if the device cannot be cleared, and whether contrast is planned.
