What can an MRI scan show about the ovaries?

MRI can show the size, position and internal features of an ovarian cyst or mass. It also gives information about nearby pelvic organs and tissues, which can help distinguish fluid, blood, fat, solid tissue or inflammation. The report may describe whether a finding has features that need monitoring, specialist review or further assessment.

An ovarian finding has several possible explanations, including non-cancerous conditions. Your clinician interprets the report alongside symptoms, examination, menstrual or menopausal status and other tests. If a diagnosis depends on cells, imaging cannot substitute for tissue examination.

Ask whether you need to change your eating, drinking or medicine routine. Tell the team if you may be pregnant, have an implanted device, have metal fragments or have reacted to contrast before. Wear clothing without metal and remove jewellery. During the scan, keeping still helps produce clearer pelvic images.

Seek emergency help for collapse, severe weakness or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need assessment even before the MRI report is available.
