When was MRI first used?

MRI grew from the discovery that atomic nuclei produce signals in a magnetic field. Scientists later learned how to encode those signals by location and turn them into an image. Improvements in magnets, radiofrequency equipment and computers made it possible to create useful pictures of the human body rather than measuring a signal alone.

There is no single moment that defines its first use. Early clinical systems were developed and tested before MRI became a routine hospital examination. Modern scanners can produce images of the brain, spine, joints, abdomen and pelvis, with different sequences selected for the question being investigated.

MRI history matters less to your appointment than the sequence chosen for your symptoms and the safety screening before scanning. Tell the team about metal fragments, implanted devices, hearing implants, medication pumps, pregnancy and previous contrast reactions. Follow instructions about changing clothes and removing metal objects.

The age of MRI technology does not determine whether your symptoms are urgent. Seek emergency help for sudden weakness, new difficulty speaking, a seizure, severe sudden headache, fainting, chest pain or serious breathing difficulty. For a non-urgent question about an old scan, contact the clinician who ordered it and ask for the report to be interpreted in context.
