What should you know about MRI scan abdomen and pelvis?

The examination may include the liver, kidneys, bowel, bladder, reproductive organs, lymph nodes, blood vessels, and nearby soft tissues. The exact area depends on the referral and the questions your clinical team needs answered. MRI does not use X-rays. Images are made while you lie still as the scanner records signals from your body.

A contrast medicine may be offered through a vein when it can make particular tissues easier to distinguish. Tell the team about kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, implanted devices, metal fragments, or previous operations before the appointment.

Follow the appointment instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and whether you need a full or empty bladder. Wear clothing without metal and remove jewellery, cards, keys, and other objects before entering the scan room. During the scan, use the call button and follow breathing or position instructions. The loud sounds are expected; ear protection is provided.

Contact the imaging team promptly if you develop a rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe dizziness after contrast. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, fainting, or rapidly worsening swelling. Outside the scan, urgent assessment is appropriate for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, black or bloody stools, or inability to pass urine.

Ask which organs are being assessed, whether contrast is planned, how to manage regular medicines, when results will be reviewed, and whether another test such as a biopsy may be needed.
