What should you know about MRI of the pelvic region?

Short answer
A pelvic MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed pictures of pelvic organs and nearby tissues without x-rays.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a pelvic MRI can show
The scan may assess the uterus, ovaries, cervix, vagina, bladder, bowel, pelvic bones, and surrounding soft tissues. It can help clarify a finding from an examination or another scan, investigate pain or bleeding, and support treatment planning. Some examinations use contrast fluid to make particular tissues easier to distinguish. Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, have kidney problems, allergies, or implanted metal or electronic devices.
How to prepare
Follow the centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and changing clothes. Remove jewellery, watches, cards, and other metal objects. During the scan, you lie on a movable table that slides into a short, open-ended scanner. The machine makes loud tapping sounds, so hearing protection is provided. Staying still helps produce clear images; you can usually communicate with the team throughout. If enclosed spaces make you anxious, discuss this before the appointment.
When to seek care
Contact the imaging service promptly if you develop a rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe dizziness after contrast. Seek urgent medical help for breathing trouble, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. MRI itself does not usually cause pain, but tell the team if you cannot lie still or if discomfort becomes significant.
Questions for your doctor
Ask why the scan is needed, whether contrast is planned, how to manage regular medicines, when results will be discussed, and whether another test is suitable if you cannot have MRI.
