What should you know about an MRI head scan machine?

The scanner's magnetic field and radio waves produce signals from your body's tissues. A head coil sits around the area being examined, and the machine records several sequences. The equipment can make loud tapping or knocking sounds, so ear protection is provided.

The scanner does not use ionising radiation. Safety screening is still essential because the magnet can interact with certain implants, metal fragments and devices. Staff need accurate information even if an implant was placed many years ago.

Wear comfortable clothing without metal and leave jewellery, watches, phones and cards outside the scan room. Tell the team if you have pain when lying flat, difficulty staying still, hearing sensitivity or anxiety in enclosed spaces.

You can usually communicate with the MRI team throughout the examination. Follow their instructions, use the call device if you need help and keep your head still between sequences. Ask beforehand whether contrast or sedation changes the preparation.

During or after the scan, alert staff immediately if you feel faint, short of breath, develop swelling or notice a severe reaction after contrast. Independently of the appointment, sudden weakness, confusion, speech difficulty or a seizure requires emergency assessment.

Ask whether your implant or device is safe for the planned scanner, how long you may need to remain still and whether a support person can be involved. Confirm who will explain the images and what follow-up is planned.
