What should you know about mri bowel endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. When it involves the bowel, symptoms may include pelvic pain, painful periods, pain during sex, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, or pain with bowel movements, especially around menstruation. Some people have few bowel symptoms.

MRI uses a magnetic field to create detailed images of the pelvis. It can help describe the location and depth of lesions and their relationship to the bowel, uterus, ovaries, and other structures. The report is interpreted with your symptoms and examination; an MRI does not by itself determine every treatment decision.

Tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, have metal or an implanted device, kidney problems, allergies, or difficulty lying still. Follow the centre’s instructions about food, drink, bowel preparation, and whether contrast is planned. Remove metal items before entering the scanner.

During the scan, you lie still while the machine takes sequences that make tapping or knocking sounds. You can usually communicate with staff throughout. Ask when and how the result will be shared, and take the report to the gynaecology team so it can be matched with your symptoms.

Arrange medical review for persistent pelvic pain, painful periods that disrupt daily life, pain during sex, bowel symptoms linked to your cycle, or trouble getting pregnant. Seek urgent care for severe sudden abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen with inability to pass stool or gas, heavy bleeding, fainting, or fever.

An MRI appointment is not a substitute for urgent assessment. If symptoms rapidly worsen, contact emergency services or your local urgent-care service rather than waiting for imaging.
