Moustache dandruff

Short answer
Moustache dandruff is usually flaky, irritated skin beneath facial hair, often related to dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis and treatable with suitable care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common signs
- Flakes, itch, redness, or greasy scale beneath facial hair
- Gentle habit
- Rinse well and pat the skin dry
- Pause
- Fragranced waxes and harsh scrubbing during a flare
Why flakes appear there
Oil, shed skin, moisture, and facial hair can collect around the moustache and make scaling more noticeable. Dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis may cause white or yellowish flakes, itch, redness, and greasy skin around the nose, upper lip, eyebrows, or scalp. A new product, fragranced wax, shaving irritation, eczema, or fungal infection can produce similar changes. Thick crust, marked swelling, pain, pus, or hair loss from the area needs a closer look because it may not be simple dandruff.
Practical care
Wash the moustache and skin beneath it gently, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry rather than scrubbing. Avoid fragranced grooming products while the skin is irritated, and clean combs or trimmers regularly. A clinician or pharmacist may suggest Medicated Shampoo Treatment adapted for facial use, or Topical Antifungal Treatment when yeast-related inflammation is suspected. Do not put scalp products on the upper lip without checking the label or receiving instructions, because facial skin can react more readily. See Flaky Scalp and Itchy Scalp for related symptom guidance.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if flaking persists despite gentle care, keeps returning, spreads beyond the moustache, or is accompanied by significant itch or redness. Seek prompt help for facial swelling, eye involvement, painful cracks, pus, honey-coloured crust, fever, or rapidly worsening tenderness. A clinician can distinguish dermatitis from infection or contact allergy.
Questions for your doctor
Does this look more like Dandruff or Seborrheic Dermatitis? Could a grooming product be causing contact irritation? Which cleanser or medicated treatment is safe near my mouth? How long should I try it before arranging review?

Questions people ask
Can moustache dandruff spread to the scalp?
The same inflammatory tendency can affect both areas, so scalp flaking or itch may occur alongside facial scaling.
Can I use anti-dandruff shampoo on my moustache?
Only use a product on facial skin when its directions allow it or a clinician advises it, especially near the mouth.
