Most common symptoms of ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy can cause pain on one side of the lower abdomen or pelvis, spotting or bleeding, and discomfort that may come and go or worsen with movement. Some people notice a missed period, breast tenderness, nausea, or tiredness because the pregnancy hormones are still present. Symptoms vary, and these signs can also occur with other conditions; a symptom alone cannot confirm the cause.

If pregnancy is possible and you have pain or bleeding, contact a clinician promptly. Assessment may include a pregnancy test, examination, blood tests, and a transvaginal ultrasound. Very early in pregnancy, one scan may not show the pregnancy clearly, so repeat testing can be necessary. Treatment is chosen according to symptoms, scan findings, hormone results, and whether there is bleeding. It may involve monitoring, medicine, or surgery.

Go to emergency care for sudden severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, severe dizziness, unusual weakness, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy bleeding. These may indicate internal bleeding from a damaged tube. Seek help immediately if you feel that you might collapse, even if earlier symptoms were mild.
