What should you know about morton s extension for hallux limitus?

Short answer
A Morton’s extension is a firm orthotic addition that limits big-toe motion and may reduce pressure from hallux limitus.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- Limits motion beneath the big toe
- Fit
- Should be assessed in a suitable shoe
What the extension does
The extension sits beneath the inside front of the foot and continues under the big toe. Its stiffness can reduce upward bending at the first toe joint while you push off. This may make walking more comfortable when joint movement causes pain, although it can feel unusual at first.
Hallux limitus can involve reduced motion and irritation at the base of the big toe. A clinician may assess your walking pattern, footwear, joint movement, and symptoms before deciding whether this modification suits you. It is not the same as treating the underlying joint changes.
Using it safely
Use the insert with a supportive shoe that has enough room for your toes. Introduce it gradually and check for rubbing, numbness, increasing pain, or pressure elsewhere in the foot. Stop using it and arrange an assessment if symptoms clearly worsen. A podiatrist or orthotist can adjust the shape and firmness; see [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/) for context.
Activity changes, shoe adjustments, and guided exercise may be combined with an orthotic. Persistent joint pain may need a broader discussion of options, including [Cortisone Injection](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/cortisone-injection/) or, in selected cases, [Joint Fusion Surgery](/treatments/reconstructive-orthopedic-surgery/joint-fusion-surgery/).
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice for worsening big-toe pain, swelling, warmth, a new change in shape, or difficulty bearing weight. Seek urgent assessment after an injury if the toe looks displaced, becomes numb, or turns unusually pale or blue. For broader background, read [Hallux Rigidus](/conditions/hallux-rigidus/) and [Toe Pain](/symptoms/toe-pain/).
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pain comes from limited joint motion, footwear pressure, or another foot problem; whether a Morton’s extension should be full-length or partial; how quickly to increase wear time; and what signs mean the insert needs adjustment.
