Misdiagnosed ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the uterus, often in a fallopian tube. Early symptoms can overlap with miscarriage or ordinary pregnancy discomfort. A Transvaginal Ultrasound may not locate a very early pregnancy, so clinicians may combine repeat scans with pregnancy-hormone blood tests and examination. Pelvic inflammatory disease can affect the fallopian tubes and is one factor clinicians may consider.

Tell the clinician exactly when symptoms began, where pain is located, whether it is worsening, and what tests or treatment you have already received. Ask how the pregnancy location was established and when repeat testing is due. Confirmed ectopic pregnancy may be treated with medicine or surgery; a Salpingectomy is one surgical option when a damaged fallopian tube needs removal. Do not delay reassessment because a previous scan was inconclusive.

Call emergency services or attend an emergency department for sudden severe abdominal or Pelvic Pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse, severe weakness, or heavy bleeding. These can indicate internal bleeding from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and require immediate treatment.

Ask where the pregnancy is located, whether the blood-test pattern is changing as expected, whether a repeat ultrasound is needed, what symptoms require emergency action, and which treatment preserves your health and future pregnancy options.
