What should you know about miscarriage water breaking?

A sudden gush or ongoing trickle may be urine, vaginal discharge, or fluid from around the pregnancy. It can happen with bleeding, cramps, or passage of tissue when a miscarriage is occurring, but fluid alone cannot confirm the cause. The amount and appearance are not enough to diagnose the problem at home.

A clinician may ask when the leakage started, its colour and smell, and whether you have pain, bleeding, fever, or dizziness. Assessment can include an examination, pregnancy tests, and a transvaginal ultrasound when appropriate.

Contact your maternity or gynaecology service promptly and describe the leakage clearly. Use a clean pad to observe the colour and amount; do not insert tampons or other items into the vagina. Avoid sexual intercourse until a clinician has advised you, particularly if there is bleeding or pain.

If a miscarriage is confirmed, ask about waiting for the body to complete the process, medical management with medicine, or surgical management with a procedure. Your care team can explain follow-up and how to manage discomfort.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, or feeling very unwell. Get immediate help if you cannot stay safe because of distress. Do not wait for the leakage to stop before seeking care when warning signs are present.

Ask what the fluid may be, whether the pregnancy is located and developing as expected, whether an ultrasound is needed, and what changes should prompt emergency care. If miscarriage is diagnosed, ask which management options and follow-up plan fit your situation.
