What should you know about miscarriage symptoms?

Bleeding can range from spotting to a heavier flow, and cramping may feel like period pain or stronger. Some people notice lower back discomfort, a sudden change in pregnancy symptoms, fluid from the vagina, or passage of pink, grey, or white tissue. A miscarriage can also have few noticeable symptoms and be found during an ultrasound.

These symptoms can have other explanations, so do not diagnose yourself from bleeding alone. A clinician may ask about timing, pain, bleeding, and pregnancy dates, and may recommend a transvaginal ultrasound or repeat assessment.

Contact a maternity or gynaecology service for advice, especially if bleeding occurs during pregnancy. Note when symptoms began, how they change, and whether you pass clots or tissue. Use pads rather than tampons while bleeding, and take only pain relief that a clinician or pharmacist has confirmed is suitable for you.

If a miscarriage is confirmed and tissue remains, your clinician can explain waiting, medical management with medicine, or surgical management with a procedure. You can ask about expected bleeding, pain control, and follow-up.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, severe dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge. Seek immediate help if you feel seriously unwell. Early assessment matters because some pregnancy complications require prompt treatment.
