How miscarriage may present

Some people notice bleeding, lower abdominal pain, backache, or passage of clots or tissue. Others have few symptoms and learn about a pregnancy loss during an ultrasound. Symptoms can overlap with ectopic pregnancy and other causes of bleeding, so they cannot establish the diagnosis on their own.

The timing of the pregnancy matters: if it is early, the first scan may be unable to give a definite answer and follow-up can be needed.

Steps after suspected loss

Call your maternity or gynaecology service for guidance and keep track of bleeding, pain and temperature. Pads make bleeding easier to observe. Arrange follow-up even if symptoms improve, because a clinician may need to confirm that the pregnancy has passed and rule out an ectopic pregnancy.

Emergency symptoms

Seek emergency help if you have severe pain, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, significant dizziness, rapidly increasing bleeding, fever, chills, or feel suddenly very unwell. These symptoms may indicate heavy blood loss, infection, or an ectopic pregnancy. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unsafe.
