How to Minimize Stretch Marks

Short answer
To minimize stretch marks, protect and moisturize the skin, avoid unproven irritants, and discuss a treatment plan based on the marks’ age, colour and location.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How stretch marks develop
Stretch marks are a type of scar-like change that can appear when skin expands or contracts faster than its supporting fibres adapt. They may begin pink, red, purple or darker than nearby skin and later become lighter or paler. Pregnancy, growth, rapid body changes, inherited tendency and prolonged corticosteroid exposure can all be relevant. They are common and not a sign of poor hygiene.
Options for improving texture and colour
Moisturizer can reduce dryness and friction, but it cannot rebuild deeper skin fibres by itself. Use sun protection because tanning can increase contrast between marks and surrounding skin. A dermatologist may consider microneedling, RF microneedling or fractional laser treatment, depending on skin tone, mark maturity and texture. Carboxytherapy is another procedure that may be discussed. Treatment usually involves a series of appointments and gradual change; the choice should include a plan for irritation and pigment changes. Read about [Microneedling](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/microneedling/), [RF Microneedling](/treatments/laser-and-energy/rf-microneedling/), [Fractional Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/fractional-laser-treatment/) and [Carboxytherapy](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/carboxytherapy/).
When to seek care
Seek an assessment if marks appear suddenly without an obvious body change, spread quickly, become painful, bruise easily, or occur with muscle weakness or other new symptoms. Arrange advice before treatment if you are pregnant, have active eczema or infection, form raised scars, or use steroid medication.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which procedure matches your mark colour and texture, how many visits may be needed, what downtime to expect, and how your skin tone affects the risk of temporary darkening or lightening.
