Mid-cycle period cramps: what they can mean

Ovulation can cause brief pain on one side of the lower abdomen as an ovary releases an egg. It may be mild and settle without treatment. Pain that lasts, worsens, returns every cycle with increasing intensity, or affects daily activities may need a different explanation.
