What should you know about a microneedling set?

A set may contain a motorised pen or roller, a disposable needle cartridge, a power unit, and instructions. Components differ, and a home kit is not equivalent to a clinician-operated device. Needles can puncture skin, carry bacteria, trigger irritation, and worsen active acne, dermatitis, infection, or pigment problems when used incorrectly. Depth, pressure, passes, cleaning, and the products placed on freshly treated skin all affect risk. The aim is controlled stimulation, not aggressive scraping or bleeding.

Check that sealed, single-use parts are used for one person and one session, and follow the manufacturer's cleaning directions for reusable components. Do not share a set or use it on active lesions, open skin, or a rash. Professional advice is especially useful if you have sensitive skin, a history of raised scars, recurrent cold sores, or take medicines that affect healing. After treatment, keep the routine simple with gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and sun protection. Avoid makeup, exfoliants, retinoids, heat, swimming, and picking until advised.

Arrange medical review if pain, swelling, warmth, redness, or crusting is worsening, or if pus, fever, spreading redness, or increasing tenderness appears. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty or rapidly developing facial swelling. Persistent darkening, lightening, scarring, or a rash that does not settle should be assessed. Stop using the set until a clinician explains the reaction.
