Metronidazole works against particular bacteria and parasites. A typical bladder infection is often caused by organisms for which another medicine is selected, while metronidazole may be used for certain infections elsewhere in the body. Burning urination, urgency, or pelvic discomfort can also have non-urinary causes.

In dermatology, metronidazole is used in some treatment plans for rosacea, which can include facial redness, pimples, burning, or sensitive skin. That use does not make it suitable for urinary symptoms.

Contact a clinician if urinary symptoms persist or return. They may ask about urine changes, discharge, fever, flank pain, pregnancy, and previous infections, then decide whether urine testing is needed. Do not use a skin gel or leftover tablets for a suspected urinary infection.

If metronidazole was prescribed for another condition, follow that prescription and tell the prescriber about your symptoms. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for the interval your prescriber gives you.
