What should you know about methylprednisolone for pneumonia?

Pneumonia is inflammation and infection in the lungs. Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation; it does not kill bacteria or viruses. A clinician may consider a steroid in a selected severe inflammatory presentation or for another condition affecting the lungs, but the choice depends on examination, oxygen levels, imaging and the suspected cause. Treatment may also involve fluids, oxygen, antiviral medicine or antibiotics when indicated. Steroids can alter blood glucose, sleep, mood and immune responses.

Take the prescribed dose exactly as directed and do not use leftover steroids for a new cough or fever. Tell your clinician about diabetes, immune suppression, stomach problems and all medicines.
