What should you know about metapneumovirus pneumonia?

Short answer
Metapneumovirus pneumonia is a lung infection caused by human metapneumovirus; it can cause cough, fever, breathlessness and fatigue, with more serious illness in some people.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is happening
Human metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus that can inflame the airways and the small air sacs where oxygen passes into the blood. Pneumonia may follow an upper-respiratory illness, and symptoms can overlap with COVID-19 or influenza. A cough may be dry or bring up phlegm; fever, chills, wheezing, chest discomfort and reduced energy can also occur. Older adults, young children and people with lung, heart or immune conditions may need closer observation. A clinician may assess breathing, oxygen levels and the chest, and may use swabs or imaging when the diagnosis is uncertain.
Supporting recovery
Rest, drink fluids if you can, and use only medicines that your clinician or pharmacist considers suitable for you. Avoid smoking and limit close contact while you are unwell; cover coughs and wash hands to reduce spread. Antibiotics do not treat a virus, though a clinician may prescribe them if a separate bacterial infection is suspected. Follow any inhaler or oxygen plan you already have. Arrange a review if fever persists, breathing becomes harder, you cannot maintain fluids, or you are becoming unusually drowsy.
Warning signs
Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, severe chest pain, or difficulty staying awake. Urgent assessment is also needed when a child is struggling to breathe, feeding poorly, or producing much less urine. Sepsis can develop from serious infection, so rapidly worsening illness with clammy skin, extreme weakness or confusion should not wait for a routine appointment.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether testing is needed, how to monitor breathing at home, which treatments fit your medical history, and when you should return for reassessment.

Questions people ask
Is metapneumovirus pneumonia the same as influenza?
No. They are caused by different viruses, although their respiratory symptoms can look similar.
Do antibiotics cure it?
Antibiotics do not act against viruses, but a clinician may use them when bacterial infection is also suspected.
