Menopause palpitations and shortness of breath

Short answer
Menopause may trigger palpitations or a feeling of breathlessness, but new, severe or persistent symptoms need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Record
- Trigger, duration, pulse feel and accompanying symptoms
Possible explanations
A racing, fluttering or skipped-beat sensation may accompany a hot flush, stress or poor sleep. Breathlessness can feel like not getting enough air or needing to work harder to breathe. Anaemia, asthma, atrial fibrillation, angina and other lung conditions can overlap with these symptoms, so the trigger, duration, pulse pattern and activity level are useful details.
What to record and try
Pause, sit upright and breathe slowly when symptoms start. Record what you were doing, how long it lasted, whether the heartbeat felt regular, and whether chest discomfort, dizziness or wheeze occurred. Reduce personal triggers such as excess caffeine, nicotine or alcohol. Arrange a clinical review for recurring episodes; an examination, blood tests or heart tracing may be considered. Do not assume every episode is a menopause symptom.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for severe or sudden breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, blue lips, confusion, or palpitations with marked dizziness. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, throat tightness or breathing difficulty after an exposure because anaphylaxis can worsen quickly. Prompt assessment is also needed for a new sustained irregular heartbeat.
Questions for your doctor
Could anaemia, asthma, an irregular rhythm or menopause treatment explain this? Should I have a heart tracing or blood tests? Which symptoms require emergency help?

Is breathlessness during menopause harmless?
It may have a benign trigger, but new, severe or activity-related breathlessness needs medical review.
