Meniere's disease: a clear patient guide

The inner ear contains systems for hearing and balance. When these systems are disturbed, a person may feel that the room is moving, lose confidence while walking, or notice sounds becoming muffled. Ringing and pressure can occur before, during or after vertigo. Symptoms often come in episodes, but the experience differs between people. Similar symptoms can arise from other conditions, so a diagnosis uses the full history, an ear examination and hearing assessment rather than one symptom alone.

Arrange a GP Consultation for recurring episodes, new hearing changes or unexplained ear symptoms. Write down when attacks start, how long they last, whether one ear feels different, and any nausea, headache, illness or medicine changes. A Hearing Test provides an objective record of each ear. Until you know how episodes affect you, avoid driving and situations where sudden loss of balance could cause a fall. Sit down promptly when symptoms begin and ask for help if needed.

Seek urgent care for sudden hearing loss, weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe new headache, fainting, chest pain or inability to walk safely. Get prompt help when vomiting prevents drinking or the episode feels markedly different from previous ones. These warning signs require attention regardless of whether Meniere's disease has already been considered.
