Meniere's disease in the left ear: what it means

Meniere's disease affects inner-ear functions involved in hearing and balance. Symptoms can be more noticeable on the left, but the affected side may be difficult to identify during a spinning episode. Ear fullness, tinnitus or muffled hearing can accompany vertigo. One-sided symptoms have several possible causes, so the side of a symptom does not establish the diagnosis. A clinician will consider the sequence of symptoms, examine the ears and compare hearing between sides.

Book a GP Consultation if left-ear symptoms recur or hearing is changing. Note whether the sound, pressure or reduced hearing is left-sided, how long each episode lasts, and whether movement, illness or a new medicine preceded it. A Hearing Test can show whether hearing differs between ears and whether the pattern changes later. During vertigo, sit or lie down, keep away from stairs and do not drive, cycle or operate machinery until you are steady.

Seek urgent help for sudden hearing loss in the left or either ear, new weakness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, severe headache, fainting or inability to walk safely. Repeated vomiting or inability to drink also warrants prompt care. A new one-sided hearing symptom should be assessed promptly even if pain is absent.
