Is Meniere's disease inherited?

Meniere's disease involves the inner ear and can cause recurring vertigo, fluctuating hearing, ringing and a blocked or pressured feeling. In some families, more than one person has similar illness, suggesting that inherited susceptibility may contribute. This is different from a simple one-gene certainty: relatives may never develop symptoms, and people without a family history can still be affected. A family history is most useful when it is specific, such as which relative had symptoms, the age at onset and whether hearing was affected in one or both ears.

Tell your GP about affected relatives and describe their diagnosis if known. Arrange a GP Consultation for repeated vertigo, unexplained hearing changes or persistent ringing. A Hearing Test can compare both ears and record changes over time. Do not test or restrict family members simply because one person is affected; assessment should be based on symptoms and individual circumstances. During attacks, sit or lie down, avoid driving, and reduce fall hazards such as stairs and wet floors.

Get urgent help for sudden hearing loss, new weakness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, fainting, a severe new headache or inability to walk safely. Vomiting that prevents drinking also needs prompt assessment. A family history should not delay review of new symptoms, and it should not be used to label ordinary dizziness as Meniere's disease.

Ask how much weight to give your family history, whether your symptoms warrant a Hearing Test, what other conditions should be considered, and whether relatives need assessment only if they develop symptoms.
