Meniere's disease in young adults: what to know

The inner ear helps control balance and hearing. Meniere's disease is linked with disturbed inner-ear fluid regulation, so symptoms may arrive in attacks rather than remain constant. A young age does not rule it out, but these symptoms can also have other explanations. A clinician considers the timing of attacks, which ear is affected, hearing changes and associated symptoms. Vertigo means a false sensation that you or the room is moving; it is different from feeling faint. Hearing may seem muffled, and ringing can occur in the same ear.

Arrange a GP Consultation if attacks recur, hearing fluctuates, or balance problems interfere with study, work or driving. A Hearing Test can document hearing in each ear and provide a useful baseline. Keep a symptom diary with the start and end of each attack, spinning or motion sensations, ear symptoms, recent illness, medicines and possible triggers such as poor sleep or dehydration. Sit or lie down during an attack, avoid driving or heights until balance is reliable, and ask someone to stay nearby if you feel unsafe.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, new weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe new headache, fainting, chest pain or difficulty walking that does not settle. During a vertigo attack, urgent assessment is also sensible if you cannot keep fluids down or cannot stand safely. New or persistent symptoms deserve assessment even when they are mild, because the symptom pattern alone cannot confirm Meniere's disease.
