How common is Meniere's disease?

Meniere's disease can be difficult to recognise because vertigo, hearing loss and ringing have many possible causes. Some people seek care only after several episodes, while others have symptoms that do not fit the usual pattern. The condition may involve one ear or both over time. A symptom such as dizziness alone cannot establish the diagnosis, and its presence does not mean that Meniere's disease is likely.

Write down the sequence of symptoms: whether spinning begins before hearing change, how long an episode lasts, and whether ringing or ear pressure appears with it. A GP can review medicines, neurological symptoms and other possible explanations. Hearing assessment helps document changes, while follow-up over time may clarify a changing pattern.

Arrange prompt care for new hearing loss, repeated falls, persistent vomiting or a first severe vertigo episode. Call emergency services for vertigo with one-sided weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, fainting or a sudden severe headache.
