Meniere's disease and endolymphatic hydrops

The inner ear contains fluid-filled compartments used for hearing and balance. Endolymphatic hydrops refers to an abnormal amount or pressure of this fluid within the inner-ear system. It is a description of a physical process, not by itself a complete diagnosis. Meniere's disease is diagnosed from the overall pattern, including attacks of vertigo, hearing changes, tinnitus and ear fullness, while considering other possible explanations.

Arrange a GP Consultation when spinning attacks, fluctuating hearing, ringing or pressure recur. The clinician may examine your ears, review your history and medicines, and arrange a Hearing Test. Record the sequence of symptoms, episode length, balance problems and recovery between attacks. Rest during vertigo, reduce fall hazards and avoid driving or operating machinery until balance has returned. Treatment choices depend on the pattern and your wider health.

Seek urgent care for sudden hearing loss, weakness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, fainting, severe headache, chest pain or inability to walk safely. Prompt review is needed when vomiting prevents drinking, symptoms are dramatically different from previous episodes, or a new neurological symptom appears. These features can point beyond an inner-ear fluid problem.

Ask whether endolymphatic hydrops is being used as a descriptive finding or as part of a Meniere's disease assessment. Ask what hearing changes should be reported quickly, whether repeat testing is needed, and how to manage future attacks safely.
