Meniere's disease and deafness: what to know

The condition involves the inner ear, which helps with both hearing and balance. During an episode, sounds may seem muffled and speech can be harder to follow. Hearing may improve between episodes, although repeated or persistent changes can affect everyday communication. One ear or both ears may be involved. A diagnosis is based on the pattern of symptoms and examination; hearing loss by itself has many possible causes.

Arrange a GP Consultation when hearing changes recur, last after an episode, or interfere with work and conversation. A Hearing Test can measure each ear and show whether the loss affects particular sound ranges. Keep a symptom diary with the timing of vertigo, ear noise, fullness and hearing changes. Sit down during an attack, avoid driving while dizzy, and use clear communication strategies such as facing the speaker and reducing background noise.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, severe new vertigo with weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, fainting, a severe headache, chest pain or difficulty walking. Prompt assessment is also sensible when vomiting prevents fluids or an episode does not settle. These warning signs need attention because they can have causes other than Meniere's disease.
