What causes Meniere's disease?

The inner ear contains structures that help control hearing and balance. Changes in the fluid environment may disturb these signals and lead to attacks of vertigo, ringing in the ears, pressure, or hearing changes. Factors such as family tendency, immune activity, migraine-related biology, or a previous ear problem may be considered in an assessment, but none explains every case. A suspected trigger is not the same as a confirmed cause.

A Hearing Test can document the pattern of hearing, while the examination helps consider other causes of dizziness or ear symptoms. Note recent infections, injuries, migraine symptoms, medicines, and situations that seem to precede an attack. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

Seek urgent help for sudden hearing loss, weakness on one side, facial drooping, confusion, new speech trouble, fainting, or a severe new headache. These signs are not explained by assuming Meniere's disease. Prompt assessment is also needed for severe imbalance, repeated vomiting, or symptoms after head trauma.
