What should you know about Meniere's disease and chiropractic?

Meniere's disease involves the inner ear and may cause attacks of vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, ringing in the ears, and ear pressure. Neck pain or stiffness can coexist, but treating the neck does not confirm that inner-ear symptoms are coming from the neck. Dizziness can also have causes that need different treatment, including migraine, medication effects, circulation problems, or neurological conditions.

A chiropractor may discuss movement, posture, or musculoskeletal pain, but should not replace a GP or ear, nose and throat assessment for new hearing or balance symptoms. Forceful neck manipulation deserves particular caution when dizziness, fainting, neurological symptoms, or unexplained headache is present.

Book a GP consultation before using chiropractic care to manage unexplained vertigo or hearing symptoms. A hearing test may help measure changes and support the next referral. Tell every practitioner about your diagnosis, attacks, medicines, hearing changes, and any neurological symptoms. If you already see a chiropractor, ask them to coordinate with your medical clinician and avoid treatment during an active spinning episode. Sit down during attacks, avoid driving, and use support on stairs.

Seek emergency help for sudden hearing loss, one-sided weakness or numbness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, fainting, severe new headache, chest pain, or inability to walk safely. These are not symptoms to manage with neck treatment. Seek prompt advice when vomiting prevents drinking, vertigo follows a head or neck injury, or episodes are becoming more severe or frequent.

Ask what tests are needed before any manual treatment, whether your hearing should be checked, and whether referral is appropriate. Discuss safer options for neck pain separately from balance symptoms, possible medicine effects, activity restrictions, and a clear plan for the next attack.
