Melanoma eye cancer treatment: what to expect

The first step is to clarify where the melanoma began. Ocular melanoma is managed by an eye cancer team, while a melanoma in eyelid or facial skin may involve dermatology and surgical oncology. Examinations, photographs, scans and sometimes tissue sampling show the tumour's boundaries and whether it has reached nearby or distant areas. The plan balances tumour control with vision, eye comfort, appearance and function.

A local approach may target or remove the tumour. If melanoma has spread or cannot be controlled locally, medicines that travel through the bloodstream may be considered. The exact sequence depends on findings that are individual to you.

Ask which specialist will lead the plan and whether another opinion from an ocular oncology or melanoma team would help. Bring scan reports, pathology results, medicines and questions about vision or reconstruction. Possible procedures include tumour removal or excision for accessible skin lesions; an eye tumour may need a different local method. Immunotherapy can be discussed when systemic treatment is appropriate. Follow the instructions for wound care, eye drops and activity after any procedure.

Call the treatment team promptly for worsening pain, sudden vision change, increasing swelling, heavy bleeding, fever or discharge after a procedure. Sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, or new weakness or confusion needs urgent medical help. Do not wait for the next routine appointment if a treated mark changes quickly or a wound is not healing as instructed.
