What should you know about Meditech ECG machine?

An ECG, or electrocardiogram, captures electrical activity as the heart beats. Small adhesive electrodes are placed on the chest and often the limbs; wires carry the signals to the machine. The tracing can help identify an irregular rhythm, changes in heart rate, or patterns that suggest strain or reduced blood flow. An ECG is a snapshot, so an intermittent problem may not appear during the recording. A normal tracing also cannot explain every kind of chest discomfort or breathlessness.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and lower limbs, and tell the operator about skin sensitivity or implanted cardiac devices. Avoid applying oils or lotion where electrodes will be placed because they can reduce contact. Lie still, relax your arms, and breathe normally while the recording is taken. The test does not send electricity into your body. Mild skin irritation can occur when adhesive pads are removed; report persistent redness or swelling.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain with sweating, nausea, faintness, severe breathlessness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Sudden collapse, a new severe racing heartbeat with weakness, or blue or grey lips also needs emergency help. Do not wait for a routine ECG appointment when these symptoms are present.

Ask why the ECG is being recommended, whether you need monitoring beyond a brief recording, when the tracing will be reviewed, and what symptoms should prompt urgent reassessment. Ask how your medicines or electrolyte problems might affect the rhythm.
