Medicine allergy in skin

Hives are raised, itchy patches that can move around the body. A delayed medicine reaction may look like a spreading red or blotchy rash, while facial or lip swelling may reflect angioedema. Peeling skin, mouth sores, blistering, fever, or feeling very unwell needs urgent assessment.

A rash after medicine is not automatically an allergy. Viral illness, food allergy, contact exposure, and an existing skin condition can look similar. The suspected medicine, dose, timing, previous exposures, and other medicines help a clinician decide whether an allergy label is appropriate.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist before taking another dose of the suspected medicine. Keep its packaging and write down when symptoms began, where they appeared, how they changed, and any treatment already used. Do not deliberately re-take the medicine to test the reaction.

A specialist may consider a skin prick test or allergy blood test for selected medicines and situations. These tests do not assess every medicine allergy and a negative result may not exclude a delayed reaction. Never stop essential treatment without a safe alternative arranged.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can be signs of anaphylaxis, which needs immediate treatment.

Seek urgent medical assessment for blistering, skin peeling, painful rash, sores in the mouth or eyes, fever, or swelling that is spreading quickly. A mild local rash still deserves prompt advice if it followed a new medicine.
