What is the medical term for whooping cough?

Pertussis often begins like a mild cold, then develops into forceful coughing spells. A person may make a high-pitched sound while breathing in after a coughing bout, although this sound is not present in everyone. Vomiting, exhaustion, or difficulty catching the breath can follow a spell.

Infants may have pauses in breathing rather than a typical whoop. The infection can spread through respiratory droplets, so close contact with babies, older adults, or people with fragile health matters when symptoms are present.

Antibiotic Treatment may be prescribed early to reduce spread and may be considered later for selected situations. Take it exactly as directed; it may not immediately stop the cough.

Get emergency help for blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt advice for a baby with coughing, Fever, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or any breathing pause.
