What should you know about meclizine and Meniere's disease?

Meniere's disease can involve episodes of spinning vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, ringing in the ears and a blocked or full feeling. Meclizine is an antihistamine that can dampen signals involved in motion-related nausea and dizziness. It may make an episode easier to tolerate, yet it can also cause drowsiness, dry mouth or blurred vision. It may mask symptoms, so repeated attacks still need a clear diagnosis and a longer-term plan.

Use meclizine only as directed by a clinician or pharmacist, and check before combining it with alcohol, sleeping tablets, sedating antihistamines or other medicines that impair alertness. Do not drive, cycle or operate machinery until you know how it affects you. During vertigo, sit or lie in a safe place, move your head slowly and ask for help walking. Keep a record of attacks, hearing changes, ringing and possible triggers.

Arrange a GP Consultation for new or recurring vertigo, one-sided hearing change or persistent ringing. Seek urgent help for sudden hearing loss, new weakness, trouble speaking, severe headache, fainting, chest pain or difficulty walking that does not settle. Vomiting that prevents fluid intake also needs prompt advice.
