What should you know about measles and vomiting?

Measles commonly causes fever and respiratory symptoms followed by a widespread rash; vomiting may occur during a general illness but is not enough to identify the cause. Gastroenteritis, food poisoning, migraine, and other conditions can also cause vomiting. The timing, accompanying symptoms, recent food or travel history, and contact with illness help guide assessment.

Vomiting can become a problem because fluid and salts are lost. This matters more for babies, young children, older adults, and people who already have health conditions. A person who cannot keep small drinks down needs closer attention than someone who vomits once and then recovers.

Offer frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. When tolerated, add light foods gradually and avoid forcing a large meal. Rest and keep track of urination, alertness, and whether fluids stay down. Do not give anti-vomiting medicines to a child unless a clinician advises it.

If measles is possible, keep the person away from crowded places and vulnerable contacts, then phone a healthcare service before attending. A clinician may consider conditions such as Meningitis, Rotavirus Infection, or Pancreatitis when the symptoms fit.

Seek urgent help for blood or green material in vomit, severe or worsening abdominal pain, stiff neck, a severe headache, breathing difficulty, confusion, a seizure, fainting, or difficulty waking. Prompt medical advice is needed when there is very little urine, a dry mouth, no tears, marked weakness, or repeated vomiting.
