Measles and light sensitivity: what to know

Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, means ordinary indoor or outdoor light feels uncomfortable. During measles, fever, watery or red eyes, and a widespread rash may occur together. Eye irritation can make bright light harder to tolerate. Light sensitivity can also happen with conjunctivitis or migraine, so the symptom alone does not identify its cause.

Avoid rubbing the eyes, and notice whether vision is blurred, whether one eye is more painful, and whether symptoms are worsening. These details help a clinician judge whether the eyes need examination.

Rest in a softly lit room and use curtains or sunglasses if bright light causes discomfort. Drink fluids regularly and follow the fever or pain medicine instructions given by a clinician or pharmacist. Do not share towels, cups, or personal items, because measles spreads easily through the air.

Call a healthcare service before attending in person if measles is possible, so the team can arrange a safer assessment. Do not use leftover eye drops or antibiotics without advice.

Arrange prompt medical advice for suspected measles, especially with marked eye redness, eye pain, new blurred vision, or light sensitivity that is increasing. Seek urgent help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty, dehydration, or a seizure. Keep away from people who could be vulnerable until a clinician advises on isolation.
