Mastitis while not breastfeeding: what to know

You may notice a sore, warm, red, or swollen area, a firm lump, or discharge from the nipple. Skin irritation, a blocked duct, infection, medication effects, and other breast problems can produce overlapping symptoms. Recent birth, milk suppression, nipple piercing, eczema, or an immune condition may be relevant. Not breastfeeding does not rule out mastitis, but it makes a clinician's examination especially useful rather than relying on home treatment alone.

Do not squeeze the nipple, repeatedly press the lump, or use vigorous massage. Wear comfortable clothing, keep irritated skin clean and dry, and use a cool cloth for discomfort. Note when the change began, whether it is growing, and any feverish feeling or discharge. A clinician may examine the breast and arrange imaging or a sample if the finding does not settle. Use only medicines recommended for your circumstances.

Arrange prompt medical review for new breast redness, warmth, pain, a lump, or nipple discharge when you are not breastfeeding. Seek urgent help if redness spreads quickly, swelling becomes severe, you feel faint or confused, or you have difficulty breathing. Contact a clinician again if treatment does not improve the change or if a lump remains.
