What an ultrasound can do

Breast ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of breast tissue. In someone with mastitis symptoms, it may help show inflamed tissue, a fluid-filled collection, or a solid area that needs further assessment. It can be useful when a lump is present, symptoms are severe, or improvement is not occurring as expected. An ultrasound does not by itself explain every cause of redness or pain; the result is interpreted alongside your history and examination.

Preparing for the assessment

Tell the clinician when the breast changes began, whether the area is growing, and whether you have fever, nipple discharge, recent injury, piercing, surgery, or breastfeeding-related symptoms. The scan is performed over the skin with gel and a handheld probe. If it shows a collection, the team may discuss drainage or a sample. When to seek care

Do not delay medical advice while waiting to arrange imaging if you have fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, or feel very unwell.
