Mastitis treatment when you are not breastfeeding

Mastitis is inflammation in breast tissue. It may be linked with bacteria entering through irritated skin, a blocked duct, nipple piercing, skin conditions, or changes around the nipple. Breast pain, warmth, redness, swelling, and fever can occur. Arrange a clinical review rather than treating persistent symptoms at home. The clinician may examine the breast, check the skin and nipple, and decide whether imaging or a sample is needed. Treatment can include an antibiotic when bacterial infection is suspected, pain relief that is suitable for you, and drainage if an abscess is present. Seek same-day medical advice for fever, rapidly spreading redness, worsening swelling, pus, severe pain, or feeling faint or very unwell. Go to urgent care for confusion, trouble breathing, or severe weakness. If symptoms do not begin improving after the treatment plan, return for reassessment; ongoing inflammation may need imaging or a different diagnosis.
