What side effects can mastitis cause?

Mastitis affects breast tissue, so the breast may feel heavy, tender, hot, swollen, or firm in one area. The skin can look red, and the nipple may be sore if there is cracking or an attachment problem. Some people also feel exhausted, achy, chilled, nauseated, or feverish. These effects can interfere with sleep, feeding, and everyday tasks.

Inflammation may settle with supportive care, while persistent inflammation or infection can lead to a collection of pus called an abscess. A new or enlarging lump therefore deserves clinical assessment rather than repeated squeezing or deep massage.

Keep milk removal comfortable and regular, using your baby’s normal feeding pattern or gentle expression. Do not try to empty the breast forcefully. Rest, drink to thirst, wear supportive but non-tight clothing, and use a cool pack wrapped in fabric for short periods. Correct latch and positioning can reduce nipple trauma; a lactation consultation may be useful. Keep track of changes in pain, redness, temperature, and the ability to feed.

Seek medical advice promptly for a rapidly expanding red area, severe pain, a growing lump, pus-like drainage, persistent fever, repeated chills, or worsening fatigue. Arrange assessment when symptoms are not improving. Get urgent help if you become confused, faint, short of breath, unable to drink, or unable to care for yourself.

Ask which effects are expected, how to distinguish an abscess from a firm inflamed area, whether you need treatment, and which pain relief is suitable while breastfeeding. Mention any allergy, nipple wound, or previous episode.
