What can happen if mastitis is left untreated?

Mastitis causes inflammation that may make one breast warm, swollen, red and tender. If infection persists, fluid and inflammatory material can collect in a defined pocket, sometimes causing a fluctuant or increasingly firm area. A breast lump is a common presentation of mastitis, but a lump alone cannot identify its cause.

Contact a clinician rather than waiting for severe illness. Keep feeding or expressing only as comfortably advised, avoid deep pressure on the breast and use gentle supportive measures such as rest and a cool compress. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, worsening pain, fever, chills, a growing firm area or symptoms that fail to improve. Urgent assessment is especially important if you feel weak or dehydrated.
