Short answer

Mastitis in a non-lactating woman is inflammation of breast tissue that needs clinical assessment to distinguish infection from other breast conditions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it can happen

Inflammation outside breastfeeding may be linked with bacteria entering through irritated skin or a nipple opening, a blocked duct, piercing, smoking, or another local problem. It can cause pain, warmth, redness, swelling, nipple discharge, or a tender area. A breast lump is a common presentation of benign conditions as well as mastitis; the symptom alone does not identify the cause. A clinician may examine the breast and decide whether imaging or a sample is needed.

Practical care

Arrange a medical appointment, especially when redness or tenderness is new and one-sided. Keep the skin clean and dry, avoid squeezing the nipple or lump, and wear a supportive bra if comfortable. Use a wrapped cool pack for discomfort. Tell the clinician about recent piercing, skin injury, diabetes, medicines, smoking, pregnancy possibility, or previous breast problems because these details can change the assessment.

When to seek prompt care

Seek same-day advice for fever, chills, rapidly spreading redness, increasing swelling, pus, or feeling significantly unwell. Urgent review is also appropriate for a new persistent lump, bloody discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or symptoms that do not improve after treatment. Severe weakness, confusion, or breathing trouble requires emergency help.

Questions to bring

Ask what findings support mastitis, whether antibiotics or imaging are appropriate, how soon improvement should begin, and what follow-up is needed if redness, discharge, or a lump remains.
